I will prepare labels for Union III (Sickles) and XII (Slocum) Corps if not already done (I'll check this thread Saturday evening at latest for reply). I can bring enough infantry stands for those two Corps but will be short 1 Corps general, 2 division generals, 3 guns and 7 limbers.

I feel left out with No Union Battle Plan!
1) Destroy the Confedrate army!
There is no number 2.
No need to go looking I am sure they will find us?
We will not rely on bayonets we have found the new technology of shooting bullets out of guns is quicker and more effective at removing rebels than using them merely to transport a bayonet.
General Lee I do hope sir that Mrs Lee makes a full recovery.

Hi Richard the labels are done; but please bring your figures it all adds to the flavour when players are using their own troops. Terry

President Lincoln
I am pleased to announce that our forces have intercepted General Lee in Pennsylvania west of the town of Gettysburg. Although initially outnumbered by 2 to 1 in infantry and 3 to 1 in artillery Generals Hancock - who led his men magnificently, Howard and Reynolds stopped the enemy's advance. Indeed as evening drew in Reynolds and our cavalry forces were counterattacking against the enemies right flank causing General Longstreet (who escaped narrowly death) corps much discomfort. The entire army of the Potomac is now concentrated across the enemy's line of march. If he continues to attach us here we will surely defeat him in detail.
Your servant General GG Meade.

Dear President Davies
I have the honor, sir, to bring you news of a great victory for Confecerate arms. The gallant men of Ewells's, Hill's and Longstreet's Corpsand Stuart's cavalry caught the army of the Potomac strung out on the march west of the town on Gettysburg PA. After much hard fighting, during which I must report the grievous loss of generals Stuart and Hood, the Army of Nothern Viginia cut off and annihilated two whole Union Corps. Amongst our prisoners is general Howard. As night fell General Meade was falling back in disorder upon the town of Gettysburg. I am confident that one more forceful push will see us through those people with the road to Washington wide open.
Your humble servant R.E. Lee (General & honorary Colonel of the 12th Virginia Bearded Infantry)

George Bernard Shaw: We learn from history that we learn nothing from history.
Goethe: Patriotism ruins history.
Henry Ford: History is more or less bunk.
Mark Twain: A historian who would convey the truth must lie.
Oscar Wilde: Anybody can make history. Only a great man can write it.
Robert F. Kennedy: Few will have the greatness to bend history itself; but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation.
Winston Churchill: History will be kind to me for I intend to write it.

I take it then that there will be some interest in continuing this battle at a later date? I hope you all enjoyed the game; so thanks for your support and patience. Thanks also to Mark for digging out the scenario and for doing the lions share of the work yesterday; as I confess I wasn't a hundred percent fit by the end of the day (mind you at the moment I am the only fit person of the 6 in my section so I am a bit lonely) Terry

Terry & Mark
I'd be interested in getting your perspective on the pre-game manouvevrings. What decisions led to what outcomes for the eventual set-up ? Did my decision to keep Stuart's cavalry close, for instance, mean that more Federal troops were able to get to the battle field ?

Did my decision to keep Stuart's cavalry close, for instance, mean that more Federal troops were able to get to the battle field ? Martyn Martyn, I don't want to go in to too much detail, but - yes your decisions did have a large impact on the set up for the battle. Yourself and Steve answered a series of questions which when combined, and after factoring in if your orders would be followed by your subordinates, gave one out of a possible sixteen starting scenrios. Then a number of random events were added to the mix which amongst other things decided the actual battlefield, the relative starting positions of both armies and the arrival times of the off-table troops. It was possible for the scenario to have turned out the other way around (i.e. the Union troops attacking isolated Rebs). It's interesting to note though that both commanders were rather more conservative in their decision making both before and during the battle than we'd expected. I'm working on a way now to move the position on to day 2. I've something in mind which I hope will produce an interesting battle, but will need to try it out over Christmas. That's assuming, of course, that people think the second day would be worth fighting. I'd imagine Day 2 would be more of a straight up slugfest, but you never know.
