Hello Folks,
Just like to say finished 50th out of 116 teams at the weekend with 3 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses. Empire/high elf build. one place better then last year ;-)
2 losses to double dark elf builds who finished 6th and 7th respectively in the ranking. Please note one of those lists had a deathstar shade unit. 25 shades with always strikes first and great weapons, chucking out 50 shots per turn, not including 3 characters aswell, asassins etc...

Well done, you beat me, we only managed about 62nd.
That Shades list sounded like a total nightmare, Daiv and Liam played them in the last round and said it was pretty difficult to do anything much to that unit.
We actually spent a bit of time on the drive back, trying to work out what the best way of killing that unit would be. I think we decided that a large unit of ethereals might do it, like 7 or 8 carn wraiths and a banshee, etc.

Congratulations, Rob.
That Shade Deathstar is a problem. One of the best ways of dealing with it depends on whether your army has something incredibly difficult for it to kill that can make it rank up. Then smash it in the flank. The units hatred can also be used against it. Getting rid of the ASF banner is the other method which will usually mean killing somebody with a 2+ save, so won't be easy.
I'm surprised you saw the shadestar, as it is very weak against Keeper demon builds. They can run the Keeper right in front of the shades and siren them in. If they flee, the the keeper can simply charge in it's next turn and probably chase them off the table. If they don't flee then the Keeper should be able to hold them up for some time - as the assassins are the only thing that could bother it in a challenge.

We came 22nd overall, d**n the Deathstar.
We had fun the whole weekend though so that is the important thing

The doubles is a 1,500 point army so no Greater Daemons, but I can see how that would work pretty well.

Doh didn't see this post - Mark feel free to removed the other one.
I have no idea how we did as we did a runner before the results as we finished at 4 and my mate had a long drive home.
Good fun though. I'll be interested to see where we did finish up in the end. Probably low down.
Hydra's were popular - we faced 4 in total and killed 2 of em.

What makes it a bit more impressive is the list was changed at 6-7 pm Friday as my teammate had not painted his half of the army due to illness, so we did a lot better than we exppected.
We went to have fun, so to be competitive as well was a bonus

We took Beasts and Skaven
Skaven:
2 Engineers, 25 Clan Rats, Full Command, Rattling Gun 5 Jezzails 3 Rat Swarms 1 Warp Lightening Cannon
Beasts, 2 x Herds 10 Gor, 5 Ungor (inc Command) 5 Centigors inc Command 2 x 5 Hounds 1 x Wargor 15 x Beastigor inc Command
In the games we won it worked really well, in the games we drew we tended to do more damage to ourselves with the rats (which was fun).
We lost against a Daemon/Daemon list which contained Slaanesh and Khorne and a DE/Ogre Combo which was quite effective. In the DE game though we were undone my my beasts getting carried away and running off towards the enemy.
We've decided that the beats were too reliable so we'll probably go all Skaven next year to be even more random. Although the new book will be out by then so the rats will probably be awesome.
One year we may even take it seriously!!

Hi Folks,
Well Done Davids Team, unlucky Stephens team and fairplay to matts team. IF your teams number was 92 you finished 83rd. Thanks everyone for your comments. Very enjoyable tournament apart from the 4 serious opponents, we had a good time. :-) Two of my mates on there firsttime with a empire/dwarf build finished 103rd, so they were a little disappointed, but enjoyed themselves none the less.
Going back next year.
we took
9 empire knights which included a warrior priest with icon of magnus
5 dragon princes with lion standard
lion chariot
chicken commander with reaverbow
2x10 handgunners
10 seaguard
rbt and cannon
L1 scroll caddy
we will take the same armys next year with a few changes. I think crossbows and archers are more effective, plus the chicken commander didnt really do enough for me. i like the idea of korhil on a lion chariot. options options.
Game 1 fought empire/high elf, first timers to the tourny. they were a little hesitant, they were a little unsure how do to deal with cav/chariot+cannon etc. minor victory
game 2 fought double skaven, we captured objectives and rolled there flanks. Reaverbow picking off ratling/warpfire and globadiers. minor victory
game 3 double darkelves -dragonslayers ben and ben. Very mobile shooty army, could not cope with sheer volume of dice thrown. reaverbow, cannon, rbt ineffective. massacre.
game 4 double demaons mixture of horrrors, flamers, plaguebearers, harpies, and demon on jugger. managed to kill the demon with cannon and pick off harpies, bounced off plaguebearers (T4, 4+ ward, 4+ regen), but caused hlaf damaged on flamers. dragon armour against flamers, very very helpful ;-) draw
game 5 double VC (best painted army award) they sat in corner most of game, so shot and crashed into there flank. Got lucky and killed the vargulf with reaverbow/single rbt shot combo. minor victory.
game 6 double dark elf (shadestar) we tried to charge the shades with kinights, DPS and chariot. All got shot to peices with shades, RBTS, and repeaters before could get into combat. Complete massacre. only our wizard left
game 7 double vc we played before. because it was last game we couldnt swap and the tbale next door was doublevc, double vc anyway. so this time they spread out and attacked us, much more effective. DPs bounced, knights bounced, chariot bounced. all managed to flee and rally though. this time the vargulf rampaged and took out seaguard, 1 unit of hgunners, cannon, rbt etc. however, we ran out of time so a draw.
All in all a very enjoyable event.

Yes we were team 92 - Trouble and Squeak =)
83rd - well thats not bad considering the time and effort we spent on army selection etc..
Oh and the fact we took armies with an awful random element - at least 2 out of the 3 games we lost because we were too busy running forward or killing ourselves to worry about the enemy.

Hi matt,
yeah it depends on what you want to do. There are those who rock up with top table armies and play in "top table ways". For the rest of us, we rock up with either slightly competitive armies or fluffy armies. i think the dice overall work out the same for everybody.
As david said, the important thing is enjoying yourself. based on previous experience of tournys, there are some people who are not fun to play against. I remmeber one game last year where all our oppoents said to us was to tell us when we couldnt do someothing, no banter, jokes or anything. very sobre. Theres nothing wrong with trying to win but when you play warhammer like its chess, sort of spoils it for me. Atleast to me these are a minority of players.
I found Ben and ben from dragonslayers a little too effcient for my liking, but they no the game inside out and there army. If there prepared to put that much time in then go for it. I was more impressed by the lads who spent 6 months painting there army (vc we played twice) who won the overall best painted army award. Really nice. :-)

Ben & Ben do a podcast "Bad Dice", so we'll get to hear their view of the game in a couple of days time, although it might be in the "paid content" area.

I think our plan for next year is to have a nice theme and a good looking army. Content will be secondry and combat effectiveness will be the least of our concerns ;D We thoroughly enjoyed it and we're definately going next year BUT yes you're right. The only tournament list we played against was no fun and also the players offered the least amount of banter. Everybody else we played was chatting to us on and off all weekend and I've hopefully recruited a couple of new members to the club. Not entirely sure I'd pay to listen to Ben and Ben discuss the tournament I'm sure they'll offer a valuable insight! So target for next year is to finish higher than 83rd! I'm thinking a pair of comedy breasts maybe required to set the right tone too.
