I must look like Carl's personal PR man Wargames Workshop are going to hold a 40k Doubles tournament on Saturday 30th August. Teams of 2 players with 750 point lists. I'd like to give it a shot (probably with my beloved Guard) and obviously could do with a team mate. Anyone interested?

Could be tempted.
Which armies would be a good "partner" for your IG ?

I haven't checked the rules pack as of yet, it'll be 5th Ed so something with the ability to scrape things of objectives probably won't hurt. I know from past doubles tournaments that half the trick is finding the combinations that break the internal balance of the individual forces.
Most doubles also have catagories of allies, if I use Guard then a Distrustful ally match would probably be an issue (last thing I need is leadership nerfs). I'll see if he has the full rules up when I get home, and start up the cheese vats ^_^

The ally rules are pretty simple, two seperate force org charts (both 750 armies must have HQ & 2 Troop).
Imperial, Tau & Eldar can ally. Chaos, Guard & Orks can ally. Tyranids and Tyranids can't join other forces.
This means if I take Guard anything but Nids and Necrons should be ok as allies.
If I was going to hazard a guess at best Combos CSM with a Lash Prince and Space Wolves both could work well. But you could use combat Eldar and use my Guard for mobile cover and I'm sure similiar combo's exist with most other armies.
