Victory!!!!
An interesting game - an encounter between Soviet forces and Germans - winter 1942.
The Russians had 8 T34/76s, divided into two groups commanded by Peter and Mike. They entered at one end of the board. Myself had 12 PanzerIII with 50mm guns. Plus Carl commanded 1 StugIII with short barrelled 75mm gun. Carl played the part of Michael Wittman.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Wittmann
This committed Nazi was Germany's finest Tank commander. Initailly he commanded a small armoured car, quickly upgrading to the Stug III we used last night. It was later in his career that he commanded a Tiger 1 at the huge battle of Kursk, later transferring to the Western Front. It was here that he carried out his most famous exploit of attacking the lead elements of the British 7th Armd division at the small Normandy town of Villers Bocage. His lone Tiger inflicted siginifacant dmage on the lead elemts of the division and prevented a strong British unit that threatended the flank of the Panzer Leah division and could have significantly shortened the Normandy campaign. So in Germany he received significant attention being promoted and lavishly personally decorated by Adolf Hitler who also attended Wittman's wedding.
Anyway the game - both sides poured forward. We had opted to omit Infantry, artillery and air support from this game. Each player diced for initiative each turn. Carl as Wittman engaged Peter's T34s but despite missing several times and causing some damage, the Stug was knocked out. I had more luck facing off against Mike and in the end numbers told as the small and less powerful Panzer IIIs managed to get lots of hits scoring light damages that cummulatively killed T34s!
We also used a role for each tank to determine how much movement to take off the vehicle because of the snow.
It was a good game that we actually got a conclusion to.
Most amusing was Peter's comment "It's 9.30 and ive lost - just like David" ha ha!
Good game, good spirits!!

Yep, definitely a case of numbers having a logic all their own – there were just too many guns shooting back at us In the end, it was a case of death by a thousand pecks
Good games though
