Hi All I've been chatting with some of you recently that I miss some of the mechanics which drive the 4th edition of Dungeons and Dragons. I therefore thought I would run a game using it. This has quickly escalated such that I now have 4 players signed up and character generation is now happening next Monday on 24th April! That leaves one space left in the game - no experience necessary - first person to sign up below gets it. Players new to role playing or D&D are very welcome. - This would in fact make an ideal introduction. Frequency of sessions isn't entirely fixed yet but we won't be clashing with Mike's fortnightly Pathfinder game so will be either fortnightly or monthly. I currently plan to run a revised version of the Keep on the Shadowfell adventure which Maurice ran years ago when I first joined the club. This has since been spruced up and has been rereleased as a free PDF ( so no peeking!). Current list of players: - Damon
- Carl
- Steve
- Stephen
- Graham
I'll bring books, character sheets and pencils down next week. Looking forward to it Chris

Gosh! That was quick! The last place is yours graham. See you all next week Feel free to start thinking about what sort of hero you would like to create. In 4th Edition more than any other edition however, the group does need to balance out in terms of different roles so it's best to come along to next week with some basic ideas and discuss with the others before settling on a final choice. I'm also happy for players to adjust or swap characters between sessions if you don't feel something is working so don't worry about decisions too much. In terms of books, you are welcome to use any official 4th edition books to create your level 1 character. We will use the standard array/ point buy system. No evil alignments please. Full help is available on all of this next week - especially for new players I'll bring along the first players handbook (which is now available here as a PDF quite cheaply): www.dmsguild.com/product/161671/Players-Handbook-4e?src=hottest_filtered&filters=0_0_0_0_0_45349_0_0 This is a great starting point for a first foray into D&D. Wizards also later brought out two other starting books which also contain the character creation rules but with different classes here: www.dmsguild.com/product/156573/Player-Essentials-Heroes-of-the-Fallen-Lands-4e?src=hottest_filtered&filters=0_0_0_0_0_45349_0_0And here: www.dmsguild.com/product/155642/Player-Essentials-Heroes-of-the-Forgotten-Kingdoms-4e?sorttest=true&filters=0_0_0_0_0_45349_0_0These last two books were intended to provide a new set of classes which were simpler to play and slightly move away from the powers system from the original core books. They are written to be compatible with earlier books (but lots of people have disagreed on the net over the years on this point. I say let's throw it all into the mix and see what happens...) There are loads of other books with new classes, races and extra powers which you could also use. Your choice! I have all the official 4th edition books. Give me a shout if you want me to bring anything specific next week - I can't bring all the character generation stuff available else that would be about 25 books! Official errata for all 4e books is available here: wizards.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2295/

Alas I have come back from a lovely day at Salute with a streaming cold. I'll have to cancel tonight as I don't want to spread this around. Can we try again in two weeks time? On bright side I have found a very cheap supply of the official character record packs and have bought you all one Happy to discuss characters here on the forum too!

Sorry to hear that, I'll see you next week then for some Pathfinder then I guess.
Chracter wise I've got three character options in mind, which one I play will depend on what everyone else wants to do.
These are: Human Mage (from the Heroes of the Fallen Lands) probably an enchanter I think. Dwarf Slayer (also from Heroes of the Fallen Lands) wielding a Great Axe Dragon Born Paladin from the Core PHB.
I'm most keen to play the Mage, but if someone else wants to be the arcane controller guy then I'm happy to play either of the other two.

Hi Chis and fellow party members.
Can I play a space marine? please? … oops wrong Thread.
Oh in that case my preference is to be a Ranger or a Sorcerer.
Other than that (rouges and warlocks excepted) I could happily do anything in players’ handbooks 1 and 2 (as I have these to hand).
What level is it?
Many thanks,
Graham

Keep on the Shadowfell is the initial introductary scenario they released along with the launch of 4th Ed. So it's for level 1 characters with no xp, as it was partly released to give brand new players an introduction to 4th ed.

Okie dokie folks - let's try for character gen on Monday 8th May! I know Stephen and Graham can make it. Damon, Karl and Steve - how's it looking for you all for next week? To confirm - yep we are talking brand new level 1 characters with no xp. The general background is that a multicultural (but human led) empire which stretched across the known world crumbled just over 100 years ago. Since then various 'points of light' of civilisation still exist but they are not very well connected. The story thread tying all your characters together is that they all grew up at an orphanage in a small town which they left between 10-15 years ago. Your adopted mother was a semi retired scholar and archaeologist and your father was a baker. They ran a small orphanage taking in young waifs and strays of all sorts of races who were too young to look after themselves or had nobody else. You can be of any race from a main book (and many others too). If you age differently to humans then you would have stayed at the orphanage until able to look after yourself. The orphanage also has had many adults connected with it over the years including teachers, nurses, doctors, farmers or other supporters from the town so if you would prefer not to have been an orphan that is also possible. Your adopted parents treated you well and set you up as best they could in your chosen path in life. They gave you each a compass as a leaving present which your mother made from various of her treasures with the help of the local metalworker. You were all told that if the compass ever glowed and vibrated, it would point you towards one of the family who is in need of help. Your compasses have recently started to glow and vibrate for the first time since you left. What happened to you as a orphan and what happened next is largely up to you. You may have kept in touch with each other and your parents. You may instead have lost touch with each other and your adopted parents in the time you have been out in the world learning your adventuring trade. You may not have got on as children. But for whatever reason, you have decided to answer the call and come to aid whoever is in need. Hopefully this suits everyone but if it is too restrictive or causes any issues let me know - basically I thought it would be fun for the characters to have known each other in some way growing up

Sorry Chris, only just seen this!
I can't make tonight - to be honest, it's all going to be a bit hit & miss at the moment with regards to regular attendance!
I think I'll have to drop out of this one.
Sorry!!

Sorry to hear that Damon - but no worries of course - presumably that also mean Karl and Steve won't be playing either?
Stephen and Graham let's discuss tonight what we might want to do - perhaps over a board game?
