I have spent some of today having a first look at the playtest version of the new Pathfinder (now available as a free pdf).
Very interesting changes. I had not really been following the blogs as I was quite busy when these were coming out so it’s all new to me. I’m still getting used to the idea of the variable proficiency bonus and the critical success and failure rules - they feel like quite a game changer!
I’m not sure what to make of it so far and am therefore going to reserve judgement until I’ve built a few characters and played some games. Creating and playing with characters is going to be interesting because, given the changes, I’m not entirely sure what an effective character looks like and how to build one. I think it’s going to be quite fun trying some things out.
So to start off with I’m just going to build a character and see - will post more tomorrow when I’ve built the basics.
Concept: a plucky halfling ranger called Stipsy Alfreton accompanied by her friendly badger “Snuffles” whom she rescued in the wilds from two mean spirited goblins who were digging up his sett. She is going to use a shortbow and shortsword I think but will mainly be an archer. I’m planning to use the scout background but I’m not planning to boost her strength as this would use a huge proportion of her advances to get even a +1 damage with her bow. I’m wondering if that will make her damage too weak? We will see! Hopefully the deadly d10 property and the crit success rules will be sufficient (plus Snuffles and his attacks!).
I’ll post a character sheet when I have one and would be interested to hear fellow club members’ thoughts on the system and how you would adjust Stipsy’s stats
