I didn't even know about this incident I had to Google it just to find out what you were talking about I think we can add "educational" to all the good things that come out of wargaming ;D
I largely agree with Mark about the gunboat fight - I don't think it would be visually appealing enough, at least not for a demo game
We might be able to do some kind of skirmish game around transporting the gunboats overland from Cape Town to Lake Tanganyika though
Thoughts people

How about 28mm Napoleonics using the Two Fat Lardies rules? The have released a scenario book based upon the Sharpe Novels. Some of the scenarios are upawards of 100 models. However as with all things like this it is scenery dependent. As Steven mentions this could be a problem in terms of storage.

Before your time, Matt, but we did a Sharpe participation game a few years ago. It was a top-notch game too. Scratch built terrain - covering the square and stables at the end of the first book. The bit where they are running the flag up the pole. Does anybody remember how long ago this was? Did we take it to Salute? Did it win?

I remember painting all of the figures and I think that the buildings are still upstairs at the club. I am sure we took it to Salute but I don't think we did very well. Didn't we do various scenario's including taking the Eagle from a column?

It duidnt win anything at Salute. I like Davids idea though. Does nt have to be that scenario though. Africa WW1 is an interesting prospect though. I like the idea of a monitor though. Soviets used monitors and river gunboats inn the assualt on Berlin - took them across land. Germans took 5 U boats over land to the Black Sea and used them there. It might be nice to do the Russian Civil War - armoured trains, ice bound ships - all exciting! Could do Robocop V Predator which as a film is rumoured! So many ideas, so much madness! Howabout Cybermen v Daleks in the snow, fighting over a crashed space ship or space base etc etc

Has the committee decided what we are doing for a demo game yet? Surely it should be their decision, (democracy in action?). Surely this is the way to do it, the committee decides, then those interest buy/paint/ offer the neccesary toys and their general assisstance. Any views gentlemen?
