Just to throw my tuppence worth into the mix...
Really enjoyed yesterday's games, thanks guys, especially Mark for taking the whistle and running the line.
To some extent I share Mark's concerns about the Prussians, but speaking as the owner of a Prussian army I can foresee few laurels for victory, but humiliation in defeat !! In one combat Richard and I threw 8 5s out of about 9 dice - if we'd been Prussian rather than Hessian we'd have mowed the French down to an almost embarrassing degree.
I agree with Mark's interpretation of rule G5.3. Only flank movement is prohibitted within 2 BW of the enemy, not retrograde. We also questioned whether the enemy within 2 BWs needed also to be within Line of Sight and so capable of interfering with that movement in order to prevent it. That's only a 'seems sensible' option, though, I can't point to any rule as authority.
I liked the restraints imposed by the command radius. That rule really forces you to plan your deployment and manouevre; you can't cobble together a plan on the hoof in M&R.
My biggest frustration with the game was not the dice rolling, but the temporary bases we used (though thanks to Terry for preparing them). Do we really need the infantry and cavalry base widths to be the same in order to play the game ? Couldn't we just state that 1BW = 50mm (or 2") and keep our AoR basing as it is ?
I definitely think you should jump aboard the 6mm band-wagon, Matt. Austrians and Imperials are still 'vacant'. I printed off the Sun King module last night and notice that my Dutch are a major power... but only as part of the 'Maritime Powers' list - same for your English (pre-1707), Terry.
On the matter of La Grand Armee, I have a copy and would like to have a go in 6mm. I even have some unpainted Adler 6mm Napoleonics kicking around 'under the stairs' which could be dusted off eventually.
