Hi All
There was talk at the club today of having a 40k club tournament this year. Walking home I got thinking that maybe a 500pt tournament could be fun and ideal.
For any who've not played 40k much before, it would allow the chance to try it out at only a small (ish) cost with little painting.
For 40k veterans it would be something different to normal games and could mean they try a new army or finally get a chance to use some of the odd bits and bobs they have lying around.
It could be a one day thing or not. It could also act as a tester tournament before a more substantial one.
It would also give scope for a small themed patrol army which could be a fun little modeling project - I've got an idea for an imperial guard training camp where only a load of conscripts, the command staff and a few veterans have survived a major attack. Can they get to friendly lines alive?
Apologies if you guys have done this before - I'm still quite new!

I think there would be alot of interest in a club 40K tournie. Ran on similar lines to the fantasy one (when does that finish by the way?). I think if people wanted a smaller 500pt tournie as a taster that is fine, but 1500 pts should be aspired to as the main event I think. Maybe a doubles tournament? 1000 pts? this may help beginners with smaller forces, who can team up to get the flavour of a bigger game. Dave

Like the doubles idea
I'd be happy with any of those options!

It perhaps time that I squeezed out of the closet and declared an interest. I have started collecting a Grey Knights Daemonhunters army and miight be persuaded to have a bash.

Doubles is great fun. 500 points each, making up a standard 1,000 point army between you. With two different armies you can have some really odd but effective combinations.
I'm up for participating in whatever is being played. In terms of a league as Dave says I'd prefer 1,500 points.
But a 500 point taster session would be good too. That's something that could probably be done in a single club night. A 500 point game ought to take less than an hour to play through, so it ought to be possible to set up several tables and simply play as many games as we can fit into the evening. Three each should easily be possible.
I'd also suggest playing that on 4' x 4' tables as 6' x 4' is a bit big for 500 points.

OK - that does it
I really must get my Tau army assembled
Yeah, I know - I've had it before Christmas, and I still haven't built it
Anyhow, count me in (dependant of course on my being able to get my act together)

My only concern with doubles is that it can make for some very powerful teams, I don't know what kind of range of experience we are looking at but I can see 500pt doubles leading to some very one sided games.
One thing that might counter the above would be to do doubles where players don't turn up in teams, and teams are decided randomly or on the basis of balance (1st and last VS 2nd & 2nd to last or something similar). This would have its own downsides though.
Personally I think it may be best just to plan a night of 500pt games for one of the none RPing nights in March, at least that way things get started.

I know what you mean about the powerful doubles teams but I think that really all depends on the people taking part and how the tournament is approached.
Lets just take out the word tournament and introduce fun and maybe 1000 point doubles isn't that bad after all ;D
If anybody treats it like a proper tournament and gets all serious about it we should stuff live badgers down their trousers!!

In terms of doubles you really have to work out the teams first, then contruct your combined force afterwards. Purely as between the two of you you still have to fit within the constraints of the standard force chart.
That means that each individual 500 points doens't nessessarily have to contain either Troops or HQ choices.
Some doubles combinations can be powerful, more powerful than a standard 1,000 point army sometimes. But with the new 40K rules where it's all about objectives or kill points and not about VPs I think that's rather less true than before. But if you're playing in a competative series of games, then part of the excercise is to construct the most effective army you can.
