We did look at bases - Mark got a sample set (from Baucus) but they are way to thick about 3-4mm which dwarfs the 6mm figures. FOW bases was an idea but they may not be the right size. There is also an issue of how many ranks to put on them and how else to fill them up. I think its worth looking the odd battalion gun on. The way the figures are cast also makes for very straight lines a bit to perfect even for a linear formation. The games at the show had two deep which looked ok but the spacing between them is important as is how to base between them if you put them too close. There is also then a lot of space in front and / or behind the lines.

I bought a sample pack of 20 bases (£2.90).
They are a little too thick to my mind. They are approx 2.5 - 3mm thick. I'd hoped the Flames medium bases might have worked, but you not get more than 8 wide. Will have to think some more on this, but may end up using the Bacuss ones just because it would be easier than cutting them myself.
Regarding how to put them on the bases. 60mm will fit 3 stands of 4 across, although it is tight. Two or three ranks look good. Bacuss base their samples in 2 lines, but I've seen them in 3 on one of the Blenheim displays.
Graham - not all the armies used Battalion guns. Actually I don't think any of the armies did in the WoSS. The Brits certainly didn't (not until 1716). I'm not going to bother with them.

I agree that they do look thick in the photo's; it would at least give somewhere on the rear of the base to write unit details. The 60x30mm seems to be an ideal size visually for them; at least we have a bit of time before we need to base.

I've prepped and undercoated mine.
Bet Martyn finishes his first though, as I've undercoated my Front Rank Frenchies too - and will probably start with them.

What size forces are people opting for as an initial size?
6mm is cheap and therefore (wedding pending) I can probably slip that by the powers that be.

Terry,
Have you based your grenadiers as flank companies to your line battalions ? According to an article by Mark Allen in the Nov. 2001 issue of Wargames Illustrated, the Dutch army of William III (ok 2 or 3 years before our period) was unusual (unique ?) in that they did not brigade their grenadiers together in flank companies but kept them within their battalion companies.
Any ideas / suggestions, anyone, as to how I might depict this for M&R; that is, how am I going to position my 'Dutch Caps' ??
Martyn

Hi Martyn; I havent got any based yet; but I was thinking of keeping the Grenadiers with the parent units; not sure if the British converged the Grenadiers in this period?
