Wonderful that Joe's getting CoC! But have anyone access to/ seen the newish World of Darkness rules? Apparently you can create mortal men (and women) there that will battle the Un-dead and and such. There's a brand new book in that line called Hunter: The Vigil and I'm thinking about getting it, but don't know if the Core book will do.
Will be interested in running some monster hunting in the future a la old CHILL (mmm... brings back memories), and I want to do it from the humans perspective.
Anyone interested/ able to give advice?

I don't know about the new WoD stuff, I have several of the old ones. Vampire, plus the Players Handbook, Werewolf and Mage.

I have played Vampire: the Masquerade, but I don't have the rule books myself
Seemed to work pretty well if I recall correctly

I played a bit of Vampire with a bad GM. The system and game world looked pretty enticing - but i didn't enjoy the game all that much because it wasn't run well.

I've got the core book and werewolf. My first / second rpg game other than dnd I think. Werewolf was good although the more experienced roleplayers I played with weren't too happy about the newer system mainly because hit and damage were made part of the same roll which reduced the subtlety. Come to think of it because of this my character did end up killing one of the other characters when he made him angry.... I also ran a one off just using the core rules with mortal player characters. Was my first (of 3 and counting) experiences of running a game. I did a supernatural detective agency thing set in london using famous buildings and characters from london's past. Was good fun The great thing about the core book on its own is that you get to play humans who have no idea about the supernatural world around them. It can be used as a prelude to a supernatural campaign or just on its own. I enjoyed the situation of my players being offered a job at this old detective agency that just got more bizarre as the night went on....

That's exactly what I want, no PC vampires, werewolves, wraiths or mummies, just plain normal g*d**n humans!!! Can I borrow the rulebook Chris pretty please?

The Vampire Players Guide has some brief rules for creating mortals, plus a separate Mortals character sheet.
If you want to play Mortals in the Vampire universe you really want "The Hunters Hunted" supplement, which unfortunately I don't have.

I've tried Vampire, Werewolf, Mage and Changeling but I always felt that, let's make it totally clear, it's not as fun as playing a human!
Looked up bits and pieces about World of Darkness and that seems to fit the bill, minor drawback that it doesn't focus on Monster Hunting, but that can be arranged. There's Hunter: The Vigil for it, but I'm afraid they might go a bit OTT for my taste.
And as far as Combat Systems go, in my 20+ years of RPG:ing there's NEVER been a system I haven't made changes to. And it makes sense, if your good at it you consequently make the injuries smart more, simple but it works. Never really felt satisfied with systems where you roll a random damage dice, regardless of your skill. You cannot please everybody...

My view was it was an obvious consequence of how the BF¡¦s where set up. I liked the idea of mage I have the Mage tarot deck some where but the time tried it didn¡¦t work out that well.

There is of course nothing wrong with taking the background from one system and then using a different systems game mechanic to actually run the game with.
I like the WoD backgrounds quite a lot, but it's not really very focused on the lets deal with the monsters angle to much. The monsters are generally the ones that are in control of things, even if it's from pulling the strings from the shadows point of view. Anyone that wants to take them on is facing a huge up hill battle as the resources are stacked in the Vampires favour.
If anyone mentions monster hunting to me the first thing that tends to pop into my mind is Buffy.

orpeheus is the white wolf game i think- certainly one of the best written rpg settings i've ever seen. 6 books, 6 part campaign all done.
i tried to get into the new WoD games but after buying promethean the created it put me off it. the new changeling setting is very different from the old one and sounds good but i sold my core book and refuse to buy another:)
anyone played 'Blood' ? its got a chainsaw crit table so i like it Little fears - you play children taking on monsters from closetland-has the best character creation system ever- you can find the pdf on the net to download as its out of print now.
Heaven and earth also sounds good. managed to pick up the players and gm's guide and now i cant find the main rulebook though!
