I picked up a set of these, and the cards, at Campaign this weekend. The rule set is named maurice after Maurice de Saxe, Marchel de France in the early/mid 18th century, and cover the period 1690 - 1790.
BTW, coincidentially, my 'French name' at school was Maurice. Did anyone else have to undergo that indignity ? Not only did you have to try and learn that dastardlt tongue-twisting language, but you had to answer to a French name as well ! Child abuse I call it.
Any way. Maurice is a new rule set which interacts with a pack of cards in quire an intriguing way, see this month's Wargames Illustrated for a review. Having read through most of the basic game rules they look quite simple but subtle too.
Anyone with a Seven Years War army fancy giving them a trial run ?

Hi Martin count me in, I did see the review and it sounded interesting, I picked up the Muskets and Tomahawks myself, I couldnt run to both sets of rules. We need Graham, Dave or Mark to give us an opponent, how big an army do we need to make a start?

Terry
You don't need big armies. The basic game envisages picking an army with 100 pts a side.
Regular infantry and cavalry (per unit) is 4 pts for conscript and 6 for trained. Youcan make a unit elite for +2 points for the first one, +3 for the second etc.
Irregular infantry and cavalry (per unit) is 3 pts - full stop.
Artillery is 1 pt for the first, 2 pts for the second and so on...
You have to nominate a principal arm for you force of either infantry or cavalry.
Amongst the cards are 'national advantages' which you can purchase from your 100 pt allowance before the game starts. The example 100 pt army in the book is:
7 regular infantry (trained) 42 1 regular infantry (conscript) 4 4 regular cavalry (trained) 24 upgrade two units ti elite 5 Four artillery 10
National advantages:
'Steady Lads' 9 'cadence' 6
Each unit is nominally 4 bases; so 24 inf. or 8 cavalry, but we could use the 12 man Age of Reason basing we already have.

We could do a Prussian civil war, of course.

Mark picked up a set of the rules and cards at Sheffield as well and needs some inspiration to stop boardgaming

So, the proposal is to try 'Maurice' out at the June all-dayer. If its moved from the 10th, though I cant do it. Terry and myself are in, with Prussians. Mark & Steve for the French and/or Austrians Please let me know if you're in and I shall give more thought to set up and forces etc. Thanks Martyn
