On train home and thought of this little story:
Gerald the evil apprentice wizard was not worried.
Sure this new group of dungeon invading heroes was much more competent than the last lot but he had his 10 hobgoblin bodyguards, his wand of magic missile, lesser confusion prepared and his ultra secret new spell that he had been furtively learning from the master's spell book for months.
Finally this spell was prepared and he had the space and the opponents to make use of it effectively.
He retreated to the back of the hall, sending all but three of his guards to intercept and stall the heroes who were already entering the room.
Gerald fired a magic missile at the ranger who was taking careful aim with his bow and he smirked as an arrow was fired uselessly at the wall and a smoking hole appeared in the ranger's chest. Meanwhile a brightly haired enthusiastic gnome carrying a miniature rapier tumbled behind the line and caught a hobgoblin off guard.
Gerald forced himself to remain calm. Now was the time for THAT spell. He began chanting the complex words dimly aware that his bodyguards were dwindling in numbers as arrows, axes and a huge greatsword did their work.
In the last second Gerald realised only one guard stood between him and the six angry and really quite competent heroes.
But no matter. He spell was ready. He raised his arms and completed the chant. Power coursed through him. Power he had never known the like of before.
He directed it at the space in front if him. Soon it would be filled with another more powerful bodyguard! Oh yes!
But something was wrong.
Nothing appeared.
Instead the remaining hobgoblin started to scream, dropped his sword and clutched his head as white markings bubbled up on his skin. Strange arcane sigils appeared and numbers and signs.
Gerald realised what had happened with a sigh as an axe and greatsword hurtled towards his un armoured head...

He had memorised the spell sum on monster by mistake.
