Certainly hope that you've ordered the REAL deal Call of Cthulhu and not the D20 variety. I had a look at the D20 and it feels just so... wrong! Levels and Feats and generally everything in that book didn't suit my taste. Just because D20-system is flexing it's muscles and gets in everywhere, doesn't mean that the system makes the conversion.
Just my opinion.

Must say, I agree entirely
The Great Cthullu just ain't scary when you've got more hit points than he has
The whole point of CoC is that you can't fight the monsters, so you have to find some other way getting rid of them

Never fear, it's the original version I'm interested in. I do have a copy of the D20 rules that I've downloaded, but I don't anticipate going anywhere near them. True to how CoC should be, if you get into a fight there's a good chance you will die. In fact, even if you don't get into a fight there's good chance you'll die. And if you don't die, well then you'll probably wind up insane. All excellent fun

Wadaya mean "probably"
Speaking as an old hand at this, insanity and death are an absolute certainty (although not necessarily in that order)
The only variable is how long it takes (one session, two if you're lucky) so don't get too attached to your character
Once you've accepted that, it's great fun

I've seen players survive whole campaigns! So it's not impossible make it through without going completely bonkers. I tend to opt for the "dive in head first" tactic however which, while great fun, isn't a very good survival tactic.

I think too many CoC sessions treat characters like one step in the story, as a result players don't really get attached to the character and the risk, death and insanity lose some of their weight.
If players can't try and protect their characters they stop caring about their outcome.

I dunno, I agree it doesn't really work if players know they're going to die whatever the case - I think Mike was exaggerating a bit. I would say though that the increased chance of death didn't make me less attached to my creations - if anything I felt more connected to them than I do in say, D&D. For example I can still remember most of the details about my characters - even those that only lasted two sessions.
It's up to the GM to regulate, but I think the style of the game naturally encourage players to think about who there characters are and how they would behave. Once you've established some kind of connection with your character, then the threat of death/insanity becomes all the more exciting.

I agree with Joe on this - and yes, I was exaggerating for comic effect (well just a little)
Actually I find that's true of all the BRP systems (RQ, CoC, Hawkmoon, Elric) - I think that the very fact the characters are so vulnerable makes them, in a sense, more "real"
If it's got tentacles, run If it hasn't got tentacles, give it both barrels and when that doesn't work, run

I guess you're probably looking at summer at the earliest, as WDC will run on for a couple of months at least, and Runequest and EarthAD ought to last a good six months minimum.

Yeah I should think so. I'll keep at it slowly until the time is right.

BTW Joe: you wrote "I've seen PLAYERS survive whole campaigns", that's a comforting thought... ;D Never mind the characters.
I trust in my Mythos Lore to keep me (in)sane.

You have to wait until the "Stars are right" :-) I'll be honest, I considered that pun and decided that it was just too cheesy to use. I'm glad someone else couldn't resist. A healthy dose of Cthulhu Mythos never did anyone any harm...I think?
