Just to let you know there is new ten week course being run by Northampton Adult Learning starting Mon Feb 22nd at 7.00 pm at Kingsthorpe School
It is called the 'Art of War on Land' and will be an introduction to strategy, tactics, operational art and military theorists of Western Europe and Russia. Each week will look at a different period up to WW2 and include an analysis of two or three battles.
Will start with a look at the 7 main tactical gambits and how they work plus the language of tactics and strategy) and how terrain affects strategy and tactics. Then starting with Alexander and the Romans go through each period of history ie. early medieval, late medieval, 17C (Gustavus Adolphus etc.) 18C, 19C (Napoleonic, American Civil War and Franco-Prussian War) 20C (The Boer War, WW1 and WW2). We will look at the military theorists from Frederick the Great, Clausewitz to Liddel Hart, how weapons affected tactics and vice versa). We will also look at Operational Art (sits between tactics and strategy), Blitzkreig theory, and the development of Russian theories of War (deep penetration) which began in WW2. Finally we will briefly look at modern theories eg. the OODA loop. For each period we will look at a number of battles, the tactics employed in each battle etc.
If there is enough interest I will also take the group on a battlefield tour (extra cost). Will let the group decide which one.
This is a new direction for the Council and needs a much support as possible. If it goes well and there is enough interest there will also be a follow on looking at tactical situations in more depth.
The cost has to be advised as well but will be their usual rates. Please keep an eye on the Northants County Council Adult Learning Website after Xmas to book etc. Please can you let me know if you are interested or need more info.
Thanks
Mike
