Hello people
I've been thinking about how we can get to this stone circle to close down this portal closed
Essentially the problem is this: The stone circle is inside a cavern, which is itself inside a hill fort that is currently occupied by a hostile wildling tribe who a probably (as far as we can tell) allied to the demonic using the portals to mount an invasion of the material plain (if anyone has any better information please feel free to say so because this is going to be a little tricky, to say the least).
So, how to do it? As far as I can see a frontal assault on the hill fort as out of the question – we simple do not have enough troops to pull this off (even if our wildling allies join it) nor can we rely on reinforcements from Thornhold any time soon. The only other option is to get small strike force into the centre undetected, close down the gate, and then get them out again (but feel free to offer an other suggestions you may have).
What we will need
1 – a small strike force to enter the cavern &ndash I'd say we need about 15-20 people (including the six of us) The only place to get these is from our wildling allies – there is simply nobody else close enough. We will need to call for volunteers – suggest we big this up as a chance for much glory (you know the sort of thing – you're names will be remembered until the end of time, songs of your exploits will be sung for a thousand generations, you will take your rightful place at the right hand of the gods, etc, etc) Note that we will need only the best warriors for this – basically the toughest fighting men we can find (nobody would actually say it this way, but we should be looking at 5th level characters at the very least – anything less than this will be of little use)
2 – a way of getting all of these people into the central cavern undetected We have already partially discussed this – we fly in invisible Basically we are going to need one fly spell and one invisibility spell for each person in the strike time Firstly, I would rather use full invisibility spells than vanish spells (they last longer and therefor give us more time) – I suggest we ask around to see if any of the wildling spell casters have this ability In order to get enough spells, we are clearly going to need stored magic – potions are the obvious choice, but at one potion a day this is going to take a long time – again we could see if the wildings have any alchemists or magicians who make some of these for us We might also be able to make use of scrolls or wands – making a wand is probably quicker than making all the potions we will need
3 – a way to get everybody out again As above, we will need one fly spell and one invisibility spell for each person in the strike team So, we need at lease four spells for each person (two fly spells and two invisibility spells) While we're at it, we might also want to take a look and healing and/or protect spells to distribute as well (and, for the record, I am perfectly happy to play my part in supplying these)
4 – holding the cavern while we close the portal down This is why we need the warriors As a group we have all the spell casters we need to close the portal – we've done it several times before This time we have the added problem that an entire wilding tribe will be trying to kill us while we a doing so We therefore need some good, solid warrior types to stand between us and enemy while we complete the rituals
On the plus side there is only one way into the cavern, so this acts as a natural choke point where a small force of elite fighters could hold off a much larger force (essentially, this is the Thermopylae plan) – hold them at the choke point while your allies do what is need to finish the war That's why we need only the best warriors – and why we need to furnish them with defensive and healing magic if at all possible
Of course, this all falls apart if the cave entrance is too wide to act as a choke point – best ask the wildings about that first
So, what do think people – do you think this is a workable plan?
If anyone has a better idea, I'm all ears
