I really should get into the habit of picking out the figures I want for my encounters before I actually get down to the club.
Also I've now worked out the XP for last nights session, which is 720 each.

Up to you Stephen, I quite like the quickly selected ones. Happy either way!
Yay! 3 more sessions like that and we'll be level 3. Extra 2 squares movement and a reflex save for me!

Stephen
A question regarding spells in wands – more specifically exactly what can be done with wands (other than just casting the contained spell)
The core rules are a little vague on this, so GMs' discretion is in play here
Question is: Can I transfer the spell into my spell book?
Spells can normally be copied into a spell book from a scroll or another spell book (this is clear enough), but not from any other source.
However under Adding Spells (core rules, page 219), sub-heading Independent Research is the following: “a wizard can research a spell independently, duplicating an existing spell or creating an entirely new one”, followed by some suggestions as to how this might be done.
Does this mean that I could effectively back-engineer the spell contained in a wand and then add it to my spell book?
If so, how long will this take? how difficult is to do? and what are the costs? Note: I am perfectly happy if this expends most (or even all) of the charges in the wand, as this seems logical to me

The answer is that no you can't copy a spell from a wand into a spellbook.
The technical explaination for this is basically that the wand simply contains a number of copies of the magical energy needed to cast the relevant spell. When you trigger the wand it simply expends one charge of the magical energy contained within it. While the wand can cast the spell it doesn't contain any of the information of how to create the magical energy etc required to make the spell work. So there is nothing there for the spellcaster to use to understand how to cast the spell and therefore copy into a spellbook.
Unlike a wand a scroll simply contains the instructions on how to cast the spell. The person using the scroll has to actually cast the spell, say the words, do all the guestures etc to make the spell work. Which is why you can copy a scroll into a spellbook as you are simply copying the instructions for casting the spell from the scroll into the spellbook.
If you want a slightly tenous real world analogy for why you can't copy a spell from a want it would be like being presented with a box of cakes and wanting to be able to write down the recipe for the cake after eating one of them.
The vague guideline rules for researching spells are that it should take at minimum a week and cost somewhere in the region of 1,000 GP per level of the spell being researched. I've never every seen anyone spend any time doing this in any game that I've run or played in.
If you want to scribe a spell contained within a wand the simplest and generally cheapest option would be to simply buy a scroll of whatever that spell is and then copy that into your spellbook.

Well Aela is all levelled up and ready to go. Lightning reflexes is my feat of choice bringing all my saves to +5 at level 3 which isn't bad for a fighter. I went along to leisure games in finchley yesterday for the free RPG day and played the special pathfinder scenario "risen from the sands". It was really fun but a really tough dungeon crawl. I got to try out some of the new classes coming in the advanced class guide in August too. I played a half Orc war priest (cross between a cleric and fighter). Seemed like an ace class. Felt more fun than a paladin. Unfortunately he was brutally killed by an irate mummified Pharaoh but hey ho.... I also bought this to help with my occasionally errant dice rolls. It's a bit noisy but very fun to use See you tomorrow

Mike- can't remember if you are a cleric or Druid for your divine caster class? If cleric, might there be some possibility of some shield of faith potions?

Thanks for another fun session Stephen. As a quick recap for anyone not playing, our band of intrepid heroes were investigating a spree of organised crime in the small city we are in. We had previously got wind that a gang of were-rats were responsible and that they operated from an old bell tower. Not fooling anyone we barged our way into the bell tower loosely and unconvincingly pretending to be pest control professionals. We barged past a protesting old man preceded up the bell tower and were attacked by an assortment of dire rats, rat swarms, were-rats and the gang's leader. The final confrontation occurred in a fun room with a series of bell ropes and beams. Here's a picture: Best moment for my character Aela was her epic duel with the gang leader up on one of the beams. One more hit from the leader would have sent her failing unconscious to her doom. Together she and Cassander (Maurice's character ) finished the leader off. Many thanks!

Mike- can't remember if you are a cleric or Druid for your divine caster class? If cleric, might there be some possibility of some shield of faith potions? Just to clarify Chris -- and this is the rest of you as well Current configuration is: Druid 2 - caster level 2 Wizard 1 - caster level 3 (due to the Magical Knack trait) I can, in theory, makes potions and scrolls for first level spells from both the druid and wizard lists (although for some wizard spells there may be a short delay) To make an item costs half the base price in materials (e.g. a Cure Light Wounds @ level 1 would cost 25gp to make) So how about this as a party deal? I use party funds to make some useful potions Any such potions are then considered party treasure (i.e. for the use of any party member who needs them) Alternately, if anybody wants something specific I'd be happy to make that too – shall we say 60% of base price to you Probably not relevant to potions (given the party potion deal above), but may be worth noting if anybody wants a scroll (Kal or Cassander, or possably Drodal if you have the Use Magic Device skill) (a similiar offer will be available with regard other items when I gain the ability to make such things) So people, have a little think about what might be needed – we should be able to kit ourselves out with pretty much what we need For infomation – party funds current stands as a little over 1100gp + some assorted stuff for sale/trade I'm not sure of the exact amount at this moment – I'll total it all up tonight and add a post here

OK people – as promised, current party treasure (as near as I can estimate) stands at: - 1,194gp in assorted coinage (mostly silver)
- one suit of masterwork studded leather armour
- three suits of studded leather armour
- three short swords
- four light crossbows
- one potion of Haste
- one unidentified potion
- one piece of amber (value 70gp)
- one topaz (value 750gp)
I'm pretty sure that's everything, but if anybody thinks I've missed something feel free to say (I am not, unfortunately, omniscient so it is just about possible )
